Determination Of Level Of Awareness And Use Of Some Improved Tools By Farmers In Osisioma Local Government Area Of Abia State, Nigeria
ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to· determine
the level of awareness and use of some selected improved agricultural tools by
farmers in Osisioma Local Government Area of Abia State. The sample size was
160 farmers and data generated were analyzed using descriptive statistic
(frequency table, mean and percentage) and Likert scale respectively. Primary
data were obtained through informal interviews, observations and well
structured questionnaire. A multi-stage sampling technique was adopted using
survey method in data collection. The results of, the study showed that sex,
age, marital status, household size and level of education were found to be
positive and statistically related to level of awareness and use of improve
tools by farmers. Few Farmers (28) representing 17.5% and (21) representing
13.13% are aware of cassava grater and palm kernel cracker. About 11.25% of the
farmers are aware of cassava press tools. Majority (56) respondents
representing 35.0% obtain information relating to improve tools through Radio
and Television. Likert Scale Model depicts that cassava grater (2.91), Garri
frying equipment (1.55), pepper grinder (1.55), shellers (1.56), cassava press
(1.81), poultry cages (190), and sprayers (1.55), appeared to be on regular use
in the study area. Power supply (25.63%), inadequate storage facilities 20%and
cost of improve tools/equipments (9.38%) contributed to the major constraints
to effective use of improved . agricultural tools. Therefore, increased
activities of extension agents is highly needed for adequate information and
adoption of new innovations.
