Control Of Maize Weevil Sitophilus Zeamais (Motschulsky) Using Citrus Sinensis Rind Powder And Oil
ABSTRACT
The efficacy of Citrus sinensis rind powder and oil was studied under laboratory conditions for their toxicities to maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Motschulsky). Clean maize grains, (50g) were admixed with the pulverized orange rind at six concentrations (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.og). A synthetic insecticide permethrin (coopex), was incorporated for companson. In the C. sinensis oil test, four dosages (25, 50, 75 and 100mg) and a synthetic insecticide Dichlorvos (DDV) was incorporated too. , The maize were infested with 10 adult weevil. Mortality counts were taken at (1, 2, 5, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42) days post treatment. C sinensis rind powder was not effective as the highest concentration of 3g/50g maize killed 51% while permethrin lg/50g caused 100% mortality of the weevil (P > 0.05). Seed damage was determined by weight loss, weevil perforation index (WPI) and percentage weight loss. Result in Citrus sinensis oil, indicates that all the treatments significantly caused mortality of the maize weevil (P < 0.05) and were as effective as Dichiorvos (DDV) and as such protected maize grains against weevil attack. Based on the weevil perforation index (WPI), all the treatments showed positive protectant effect and grain loss was highest in the unprotected control.
