Constraints Of Information Accessibility And Information Seeking Behaviour Of Undergraduates In Universities In Eastern Nigeria:- Okezie, Chinyere A.
Abstract
The major focus of this study was to examine
the constraints of information accessibility and information seeking behaviour
of undergraduates of universities in Eastern Nigerian. The survey research
method was adopted for the study. A sample size of 500 undergraduate students
was drawn from a population of 5,010, using the proportionate stratified random
sampling technique. Five selected universities in Eastern Nigerian, namely :Imo
State University, Owerri, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike,
Madona University, Okija, Federal University of Technology, Owerri, and Abia
State University, Uturu used for the survey. The data collection instrument was
a researcher structured questionnaire, while data analysis was by means of
descriptive statistics using frequencies and percentages. Findings from the
study revealed among other things, that: Information availability is
insufficient in terms of quality and quantity in university libraries,
SouthEast, Nigeria, several factors constitute constraints to information
accessibility to undergraduates of universities in south- east, Nigeria,
including: unfriendly attitude of library staff. poor facilitating directories,
inadequate knowledge of how to use library materials, etc. Undergraduates of
universities in south eastern Nigeria, have a preference for the internet, as
source of information, over the university library.
