Comparative Study Of Proximate, Phytochemical, Nutritive And Medicinal Values Of Rauwolfia vomitoria, Spondias mombin, and Azadirachta indica from the Nigerian Rainforest
ABSTRACT
The
leaves, bark and roots of Rauwolfia vomitoria, Spondias mombin and Azadirachta
indica were obtained from Umuobiala Isuikwuato, Local Government Area of Abia
State Nigeria. Their Proximate, Phytochemical, Vitamin and Mineral contents
were assssed. An ethno-medicinal investigation was also carried out in
Umuobiala to find out the medicinal values of these three plant species. The
range of the alkaloid, saponin, flavonoid, phenol and tannin contents of the
plants parts were 0.4-4.04%, 0.47-4.32%, 0.43-2.21%, 0.22-0.94% and 0.21-3.60%,
respectively. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the
moisture, ash, protein, fibre. fat and carbohydrate contents of the leaves of
the three plants. There were significant differences (p<0.05) in the
phytochemical, vitamin and mineral compositions of the leaves, stem and roots
of the three medicinal plants studied. The result of this study showed that the
phytochemical. vitamin, and mineral compositions of the leaves. stems and roots
of Rauwolfia vomitoria, Spondias mombin and Azadirachta indica were in
appreciable amounts and these can be of health significance. The elevated
levels of the phytochemicals (alkaloids, flavonoids. tannin. soponinins).
vitamin and minerals in the plant parts investigated may account for their
effective use in the treatment of a wide range of ailments including malaria,
intestinal ulcer, arthritis and mental ailments.
