ABSTRACT

The importance of highway pavement to human progress in terms of movement and industrialization cannot be overemphasized. Moreso is the importance of the studied highway connecting the states of Akwa Ibom and Cross River in Nigeria to the economic development of the people of the states and the country at large. The danger associated with the use of this failed highway is something to worry about, yet the necessity to study the situation and propose sustainable ways to remedying and managing the situation. A field work was embarked upon to collect samples from the 26 failed portions of the road from its subgrade, subbase and course layers for laboratory analysis. The experimental studies which produced multiple results from subgrade/subbase and course layers showed that the pavement had failed due to poor subgrade and subbase materials selection on 6 out the 20 points of inference, which failed California Bearing Ratio (CBR) basic requirement for the layers for Nigerian roads and due to asphalt bitumen content on all the 26 locations studied. The multiple data were subjected to Multi-linear Regression (MLR) and Genetics Programming (GP) based intelligent predictions to forecast possible remedy procedures, the outcome of which showed that for the CBR models, GP showed prediction accuracy of over 80% against an error of 16% to outclass MLR while for the MS models, GP also executed the predictive model at an accuracy of 44% against an error of 16.5% to outclass the MLR, though with a poor accuracy below 80%. This shows that GP with its robust model execution can be used to forecast the CBR and Marshall Stability (MS) of the subgrade/subbase and course layers of the studied pavement as proposed remedy, maintenance and performance procedures to sustain its use.
