ABSTRACT

 This study was designed to evaluate the different extraction yield and concentration of antioxidants in vemonia colorata using different extraction technique. Dry leafs of vemonia colorata were extracted using 50:50 ethanol and methanol mixture using different extraction technique via Cold water, digital water-bath and shaker, soxhlet and microwave assisted extraction. The antioxidants such as the total phenolic content(TPC),total flavonoid content and l,l-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging were determine spectrophotometrically in all the extract. Percentage yield using different extraction technique was as follow cold water (ethanol 16.8%, methanol 20.8%), Digital water-bath and shaker gave(ethanol 19.6%, methanol 17.6%), soxhlet (ethanol 9.2%, methanol 32%) and microwave assisted (ethanol 24%, methanol 21%). The highest TPC was obtain from the digital shaker (46.17±2.74) using ethanol solvent. The highest concentration in total flavonoid content was obtain from soxhlet method and ethanol as solvent (1062.04±313.80) while the DPPH radical scavenging activity was highest in ethanol extract obtained in soxhlet method (258.82±26.92). These finding shows that for antioxidants assays, the use ofsoxhlet method and ethanol solvent gives high DPPH scavenging activity and Total flavonoid content while digital shaker and ethanol solvent gives highest ofTPC.
