Comparative Assessment Of The Germination And Early Growth Rate Of Cola Pachycarpa (K. Schum) And Cola Lepidota (K. Schum):- Otunmmah Chinwekele A
ABSTRACT
The study comparatively evaluated the germination
and early growth characteristics of' Cola lepidota and Cola pachycarpa. The
objectives of the study were to assess the germination rate of the species,
determine the early growth characteristics ofthe species and compare the
germination and growth characteristics ofthe species. The experiment
comprise^of 2 species of cola with three replications and was laid out in
Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The dried seeds were planted in a top
soil planted 2cm deep in 30 poly pots filled with 5kg ofthe top soil collected
from the farmland near the nursery. The results revealed that C. lepidota species
had 3.57%, germination 1 week after planting (WAP) while the C. pachycarpa
species had none. But at 12 WAP, the C. lepidota species had 16.07 % gemination
while the C. pachycarpa species had 20% germination. The growth characteristics
of the two species showed that C. lepidota species had higher number of leaves
(100) at 12 WAP than the number of leaves of C. pachycarpa species (50).
Similarly, the C. lepidota species had higher plant height and girth than the
C. pachycarpa species. The seed gemination characteristics showed that the C.
lepidota specie had early seed gemination than the C. pachycarpa species.
