This experiment was carried out to study the feed promise of castor seed oil meal (Ricinus communis) in terms of its chemical composition, limitations of its use, and possible ways of improving its nutritive value through locally adaptable processing methods as well as finding its optimum level of inclusion in pullet birds' diets. The raw and processed seed samples were assessed for proximate composition,, mineral and ricin contents, thereafter three feeding trials were conducted. First on the acute toxicity effects of the raw seed extract and therafter true rnetabo!isable energy (TME) of both raw and processed meals was determined. Based on the results of the chemical analyses, two processing methods adjudged best were selected and used to process seeds for other feeding trials. Meals from these two processing methods were used at five different levels (0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) to formulate chick, grower and layer mashes to assess the growth performance, egg laying characteristics and egg quality characteristics of pullets birds using 390 Isa Brown day old pullet chicks in a 2 X 5 factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design experiment.
