ABSTRACT
Phytochemical and bioactivity studies on
extracts Fea Xylopia aethiopica and Ocimum gratissimum was carried out.
Phytochemical screening reveal the presence of tannins, phytates, cyanogenic
glycosides, steroids, flavonoids. Alkaloids in both plants. Quantitative
analysis of the phytochemicals present showed that Xylopia aethiopica had the
highest tannin content (20.95mg/100g) while the tannin conent in Ocimum
gratissimum was found to be 21.41mg/100g. Xylopia aethiopica and Ocimum
gratissimum had a high oligosaocharide contents (49.2% and 12.2% respectively).
Alkaloid content in both plants were slightly high with Xylopia aethiopica
having 1.37% and Ocimum gratissimum having 1.23%. phytate content of Xylopia
aethiopica and Ocimum gratissimum was found to be 0.103mg/100g and 0.058mg/100g
respectively. The extracts of both plants showed a high bioactivity with the
ethanolic extract of Xylopia aethiopica having the highest bioactivity with an
EDso (15.9g/ml) followed by the aqueous extract of O. grastissimum having an
EDso (23.95ug/ml). The ethanolic extract of 0. gratissimum also indicated a
high bioactivity (26.3g/ml), the aqueous extract of X aethiopica had an EDsp of
27.5yg/ml.
