Bacterial Flora Of Open And Close Water Tanks In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Umudike
ABSTRACT
Stored and closed tank water samples collected
from different locations/sites within Michael Okpara University of Agriculture
Umudike were examined with respect to determining the distribution pattern of
bacterial flora in the tanks ranging from open and to the ones with covers, the
types of bacteria and total number were put into consideration all these were
achieved via routine bacteriological techniques employed in water analysis.
Enrichment medium such as Nutrient agar was used to isolate several bacteria.
Result of the analysis shows that the following bacteria were predominant.
Staphylococcus spp, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Proteus and Escherichia spps. The
site most contaminated was Site 6 which had up to 1.55 x 10' cfu/ml and MPN
index of20 while Site 5, 8 and 4 had 1.11 x 10\, 8.9 x 10 1 , 7.1 x 10'cfu/ml
and 11, 15 and 4 MPN index respectively and Site l and 3 had lower numbers of
bacterial count/ml, considerable distribution were seen between the samples
from the different sites, the tanks with covers (close) showed lower microbial
count, while those without cover (open) showed higher bacterial count.
