ABSTRACT

This study was to evaluate the bacteria involved in anaerobic digestion of poultry droppings. The anaerobic digestion of poultry droppings was investigated for 30 days in a sample biodigester. A total six (6) bacterial strains were isolated from poultry droppings. The bacteria isolates were examined by morphological (microscopic) staining and further confirmed by biochemical test.lt was observed that Escherichia coli is the most frequently occurring isolates from the poultry droppings samples with a percentage occurrence of (30.6%), followed by Bacillus spp with a percentage occurrence of (22.2%), then Pseudomonas aeruginosa with a percentage occurrence of (19.4%), Klebsiella spp (13.8%), Staphylococcus aureus with a percentage occurrence of (8.3%) whereas Proteus spp had the least percentage occurrence of (5.6%).The physiochemical parameters from the anaerobic digestion ofpoultry droppings for 30days indicates the poultry droppings shown an anaerobic count of 2.74 x 106cfu/ml with a range of l.lx 106cfu/ml to 4.1xl06cfu/ml. The mean temperature recorded from the sample was 27.2°C. Mean dissolved oxygen (DO) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) is 6.40 mg/L,7.85mg/L and 1723.40mg/l respectively. The mean pH value recorded from the sample was 5.29. The mean gas volume produced during this study is 2.20Ld-1. From the results obtained, it can be concluded that microorganisms are present in poultry droppings. This study showed that anaerobic digestion of poultry manure for 30 days reduces the bacterial diversities. It is evident that the anaerobic digestion of poultry dropping was found feasible, indicating that the treatment ofthis manure which is a nuisance to the environment and pose a public health risk could be attained through anaerobic digestion.
