ABSTRACT
Studies were carried out on the assessment of
nutritional composition, morphological characteristics and early seedling
growth rate of mucuna flagellipes across provenance in Umudike Nigeria. Hot and
cold water treatment were conducted at the nursery of the department of
forestry and environmental management of Michael Okpara university of agriculture
Umudike, Nigeria. Presowing treatment methods were applied and it comprised of
soaking for different durations in water at room temperature and in hot water
for varying temperatures at 25°c, 50°c and 100°c all for lOmins. Results show
that the seeds ofmucuna species obtained from Akwa Ibom have high content of
vitamins B1,B2,B3 and E, than those from Ogun and Abia states respectively
after being subjected to laboratory analysis. Hierarchical clustering method
was used in the statistical analysis to determine the significance on the
mucuna species. The mucuna seeds sourced from Abia has high significance in pod
length, pod weight, seed length, seed width, fruit weight compared to those
gotten from Ogun and Akwa Ibom states. Results also showed that pre-sowing
treatments has high significance on the cumulative germination over planting
the seeds without pre-soaking. Apparently, without presowing seeds treatments,
germination was practically slow.
