Assessment Of Food Consumption Pattern Of 'Keke' Napep Operators In Umuahia Metropolis, Umuahia North Local Government Area Of Abia State.
ABSTRACT
The study investigated the food
consumption pattern of one hundred and twenty (20) 'Keke' NAPEP operators
purposively selected from Umuahia Metropolis. Information on the Socio-economic
characteristics, food frequency, 24-hour dietary recall and nutritional status
were obtained by means oi questionnaire and anthropometry. The result showed
that the subjects were all males within the age range of 21 — 45 years. Most
(45.8%) of the subjects had large family size (7-fl) and 50% of them got their
tricycle on hire — purchase. Majority of the subjects consumed two meals daily.
The food frequency data revealed that the most frequently consumed meals were
beans + yam (50%) and garri + soup (25%) while items like spaghetti aid
macaroni, fruits and fish were rarely consumed. The 24 — hour dietary recall
data showed that 50% of the subjects consumed yam and beans as breakfast, about
62.5% skipped lunch and 47.5% consumed garri and soup as dinner. Majority (75%)
of the subjects consumed water as snacks while confectionaries like buns
(9.3%), biscuit. (4.%) and meat pies (2%) were rarely consumed. The
anthropometry result showed that 47.5% were under nourished, 18.3% were normal,
33.3%, overweight while 0.8% were obese. This situation is riot encouraging as
malnutrition is one of risk factor for ill health. Nutrition education on the
consumption of adequate diet, improved fruits and vegetables consumption as
well as engagement in other occupation like farming to ensure food security are
recommended
