Assessing The Dietary Habits Of The Elderly Living With Spouse And Those Living Alone In Umuahia North L.G.A (Urban And Rural Area)
ABSTRACT
This study evaluated the dietary adequacy of elderly individuals in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State; to determine whether living arrangements were related to nutrient intake. Factors affecting their nutrient intake were also determined, this include social isolation I environment, religion, health, situation of the economy and culture. The participants (n=144) were individuals aged 65 to 81 years recruited through residential housing areas, community meetings sites and churches. Questionnaires were used to collect general dietary information and factors effecting dietary pattern. Weighed food intake was used to collect data on nutrient intake which was compared with FNB- NRC- NAS, 1989 RDAs (Recommended dietary allowance). The elderly living with spouse and those living alone in the urban and rural area met the RDAs for energy, protein and iron but were unable to meet the recommendation for calcium, vitamin C, vitamin A, Thiamin and Riboflavin. It was found that there was no significant difference in the factors affecting feeding pattern of the elderly in both urban and rural area. The elderly living with spouse and those Living alone in the urban and rural area were found to eat twice daily skipping one meal particularly breakfast (48.97% & 79.32%). The elderly living alone did not make poorer food choices than those living with spouse. There is need for extensive nutrition- education in both rural and urban area for the elderly.
