ABSTRACT
This study was designed to evaluate the human health risk associated with As and Cr through consumption of food crops (Pumpkin Iea1 Bitter leaf, water leaf, yarn, cocoyarn, cassava,orange, star apple, pawpaw, coconut, kolanut, palm kernel nut.) harvested from industrialized areas in the South Eastern states in Nigeria. The studied areas include Iretc, Akwu-uru, Osisioma, ishiagu, Ngwo and Urnudike which was the control. The concentrations of Arsenic and Chromium were determined using Atomic Absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The mean concentration ofCr ranges from 1.85±0.21 to 1315.40±0.57 in Irete, 0.35±0.21 to 58.90±0.14 in Ngwo, 1.10±0.14 to 196.53±0.04 in Osisioma, 1.50±0.01 to13 15 ± 0.00 in Akwu - Uru, 4.55 0.07 to 294.25 ± 0.35 in Ishiagu and 0.06 0.00 to 116.20 0.00 lbr control in Mg/Kg dry weight. The mean concentration of As in the studied areas is the same 0.01 0.00 Mg/Kg dry weight. There was significant difference (p<O.05) in the chromium concentration between crops collected from the contaminated soils in industrialized areas of the different south eastern states in nigeria. The order of abundance of As and Cr among the studied areas is in the order Akwu-Uru > Irete > Ishiagu > Ngwo > Urnudike > Osisioma.The daily intake of chromium in the studied areas were above the established rePrencc dose on 0.003 Mg/Kg/day recommended by Fao/WI-Io (1993), USEPA (2011) while the daily intake of Arsenic in the studied areas were below the established tolerable daily intake of 0.0003Mg/Kg/day recommended by Fao/WHO (1993), USEPA (2011). The total hazard quotient of Cr from the studied areas were greater than one while the THQ of As from the studied areas were less than 1. This implies that the consumers of food crops from the studied areas might experience significant health risks from intake on chromium through food crop consumption while that of Arsenic would not pose a serious health risk.
