Appraisal Of The Role Of Accountants In Prevention And Control Of Fraud And Errors In Government Parastatals (A Study Of Abia State Water Corporation)
ABSTRACT
The professional training and transparency of accounting
practice put accountants in a good stead in serve as firewall against fraud in
any organization. Their function in this regard is more relevant in government
parastatals. The study was carried out to empirically appraise the role qf
accountants in prevention and control of fraud and errors in Abia State Waler
Corporation as reference point of a government parastatals. The statistical
analysis was supported by primary data obtained through administration of questionnaire
in a fIeld survey. The primary c/ala collected from the returned questionnaires
were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation and regression
analysis. The empirical evidence obtained from the statistical analyses
indicated that there was significant relationship between the accountants' role
and fraud prevention and control in the public sector parastatals and that
fraud has no significant effect on the per formnance of public sector
parastatals. The recommendations made were that every 'V government parastatals
should have a pool of well trained and qualified accounting personnel, there is
a need train and retrain the staff of accounting department in new fraud
Jighting technique and there is a need to gradually introduce forensic accounting
into the accounting infbrmalion system ofpublic pai'astatals.
