ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases associated with hyperglycemia.lts is a major world wide public problem made more acute in Africa by low socio-economic standards. Clinical expression of diabetes is dependent on both genetic and acquired factors (Expert Committee On The Diagnosis and Classification Of Diabetes Mellitus(1998). Diabetes mellitus is associated with most common complications such as artherosclerosis, nerve damage, renal failure, male impotence and infection. Worldwide, an estimated 150 million people are affected by diabetes and this number is likely to reach 300 million by the year 2025 if successive strategies are not implemented for its prevention and control (King et al., 1998). In recent studies, some evidence suggest that oxidative stress may play some role in the etiology of diabetes and diabetic complications (Shin,1998). Nouroozzadeh et aL,(1997) has also reported an altered balance between ROS production and antioxidants though there is lack of data in the actual status of antioxidant enzymes in diabetic patients. Though insulin therapy is used for the management of the disease, there are still drawbacks like insulin resistance( Piedrola et al. ,2001), as well as of its high cost which are not affordable in the poor economic community.
