ABSTRACT
The antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of
bacterial isolates from patients with urinary catheter at Federal Medical
Center, Umuahia, Ahia state, of Nigeria was studied. A total of33 catheter
urine samples were collected from patients admitted at Federal Medical Center,
Umuahia. Samples collected were cultured on MacConkey agar and Cystein Lactose
Electrolyte Deficient (CLED) agar using the streaking method. Pure colonies of
isolate were biochemically characterized. identified and the antibiotic
susceptibility test performed using Muller Hinton agar. Out of the 33 samples
analyzed, 21 (63.64%) produced significant growth with 23 microbial isolates.
The bacterial isolates included E. coil 8 (34.70%), followed by Pseudomnas
aeruginosa 5 (21.74%), Klebsiella sp 4(17.39%), Staphylococcus aureus 3
(13.04%) and Proteus mirabilis 3 (13.04%). The isolates showed high resistance
to commonly used antibiotics such as arnpicillin (100%), tetracycline (95.65%),
augumentin (91.30%), cotrimaxole (91.30%), gentamycin (82.61%) and nalixidic
acid (82.61%). Intermediate level of resistance was found against ofloxacin
(69.57%) and perfloxacin (60.87%). Only nitrofurantoin and ciprofloxacin
(56.52% and 43.48% sensitivity respectively) appeared most effective.
Therefore, treatment of patients with catheter associated urinary tract
infection in this institution should be guided by the result of susceptibility
test of isolates and based on doctor's prescription so as to reduce the
incidence of multiple-resistance.
