ABSTRACT

The distribution of various pathogens causing wound infection was evaluated in different hospitals in Umuahia. A total of sixty wound swabs were collected and cultured. Six different species of bacteria were isolated. Staphylococcus aureus (32%),Escherichia coli(26%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (22%) were the predominant organisms followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae (8%),Coagulase negative staphylococci(CONS) (8%) and the least was Proteus mirabi1is(4%).The ~ntibiotic susceptibility test of the bacterial isolate was performed by KirbyBauer disk diffusion method. Most bacterial isolates were resistant to al must all the antimicrobials employed. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Staphlococcus aureus were found to be highly resistant to commonly used antibiotics such as streptomycin, ampicillin. High rate of multiple antibiotic resistances was observed in both Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial isolates recovered. This type of study should be encour.aged to know when there are changes in the resistance pattern of various bacteria as this will be of local clinical relevance to guide therapeutic options
