ABSTRACT
Hand hygiene, particularly hand sanitizing, is
essential in reducing infectious disease transmission. The recent outbreak of
corona around the world both increased public awareness of the practice of hand
sanitizing and resulted in the introduction of new products to the Nigerian
market. This study set out to explore the antimicrobial activity of three
products (MOUAU, Dettol and Lemon fresh hand sanitizers) against MRSA from
poultry workers. A total of 23 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from
poultry workers were screened for their antibiotics susceptibility pattern in
the disc diffusion technique as well as for methicillin resistance using
cefoxithin discs. The MRSA strains were exposed to different concentrations
(50%, 100%, and 25%) each of different kinds of sanitizer (MOUAU, Dettol and
lemon fresh) using the agar well diffusion technique. Ofloxacin and
Levofloxacin were observed to be the most active against the isolate with 86.6%
susceptibility each. Gentamicin and ciprofloxacin also approach appreciable
antibacterial activity with 73.9% and 78.3% susceptibility level respectively.
Cefotaxime had decreased activity with 56.5% ofthe isolate being resistant to it.
There was an overall 43.4% MRSA recorded in this study. The MOUAU sanitizers at
the difference concentration tested had remarkable activity against the MRSA
strain with zone sizes ranging between 14.0 and 24.0mm. From this study MOUAU
hand sanitizer exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity against MRSA
compared to the rest of the hand sanitizers used.
