Antimicrobial Activity Of Hibiscus Sabdariffa On Some Enteric Organisms. :- Raymond, Prisca O
ABSTRACT
Antimicrobial activity of Hibiscus sabdariffa on
some enteric organisms (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp, Proteus sp and
Klebsiella sp) was carried out using different concentrations of the plant
extract (200mg/ml, 400mg/ml, 600mg/ml, 800mg/ml). The disc diffusion method was
used to obtain the zone of inhibition at different concentrations of the
extract on the test organisms. The plant extract were more effective on Proteus
sp having a maximum zone of inhibition of 12.0mm at the concentration of 600mg
and 800mg. It was also effective on Escherichia coli having a maximum zone of inhibition
of 10.5mm and 12.5mm at the concentration of 600mg and 800mg respectively.
Klebsiella sp showed more resistance by having the lowest zone of inhibition of
7.0mm at the concentration of both 200mg and 400mg. The phytochcmistry of the
plant sample indicated the presence of tannin, oxalate and phytic acid. Thus;
the antimicrobial activities exhibited by Hibiscus sabdariffa in these project
signifies that the plant can be used as a potential antimicrobial agent.
