ABSTRACT
Vernonia amygladina (bitter leaf) and
Azadirachta indica (Neem leaf) arc tropical plants used in treatment of
different ailments. This study was aimed to verify the antimicrobial activities
of the leaf extracts of Vernonia amygdalina (bitter leaf) and Azadirachta
indica (neem leaf) with ethanol and cold water as solvent for extraction and
also to analyze its phytochemicals. The antimicrobial activities of the two
plant extracts were carried out on Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans
using agar well diffusion assay. The largest diameter zone of inhibition was
observed in the ethanol extract of the Neem leaf against Staphylococcus aureus
at 15mm and Candida albicans at 12mm.The pathogens were resistant to the aqueous
extract of bitter leaf at different concentrations. The phytochemical screening
revealed the presence pf alkaloids, saponins, tannins, phenols and flavonoids.
The result of this study suggests the presence of active compounds in the plant
extracts with antimicrobial activities against the pathogenic strains which
justifies its cthnomcdical use.
