Antibiotics Susceptibility Pattern And Plasmid Profile Of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Isolated From Nasal Passages Of Students In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike:- Ezeibekwe, Peculiar
ABSTRACT
This study
determined the antibiotics susceptibility pattern and plasmid profile of
methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from nasal passages of
students in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, (MOUAU). A total
of forty (40) nasal samples were collected aseptically using a sterile swab
sticks moistened with physiological saline. The samples were cultured on
Mannitol Salt agar using streak plate techniques. A total of sixteen (16)
Staphylococcus aureus isolates were recovered from school children which was
further screened for their antibiotics susceptibility profile and subsequently
for methicillin resistance. A percentage rate 56.2% of the Staphylococcus
aureus was seen to be Methicillin resistant when subjected to screening. From
this study, the drug susceptibility profile of Staphylococcus aureus isolates
from nasal swab samples had varying percentage of sensitivity and resistance to
the antibiotics tested with Ofloxacin (5mcg), Levofloxacin (30mcg) and
Gentamicin (30mcg) exhibiting increased activity against the Staphylococcus
isolates with 87.5%, 81.2% and 68.7% respectively. It was seen that 87.5% ofthe
isolates were resistant to Augmentin. Also. 68.7% and 56.2% ofthe isolates were
found to be resistant to Augmentin. None ofthe 5 isolates were found to harbour
plasmid in the alkaline lysis method used. Hence, the need for aggressive
surveillance system in hospitals and clinics for early detection of antibiotic
resistant Staphylococcus aureus among the patients in the hospital and clinical
setting due to the high prevalence of these microorganisms in MOUAU, Abia
state, Nigeria.
