Antibiotic Sensitivity Patterns Of Salmonella Species Isolated From Pigs In Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture Farm Centre
ABSTRACT
Fifty (50) rectal swab samples were
collected from pigs in the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Farm
Centre. Twenty-two (22) representing 44% of the samples produced significant
growth of Salmonella species while the rest did not produce any growth. The
antibiotic sensitivity profile was determined using the disc diffusion method
with ABTEK brand of antibiotic sensitivity disc. The sensitivity test revealed
that twenty-one (21), representing 95.5% of the isolates were sensitive to
Nitrofurantoin, the isolates were also fully sensitive to Gentamicin,
Augmentin, Ofloxacin, Nalidixic acid. 18.2% were moderately sensitive to
Amoxicillin and Cotrimaxazole. All the isolates were completely resistant to
Tetracycline, as it did not show any observable zone of growth inhibition. The
result of this work points to the contribution that the use of antibiotics as
growth factors in food animal production is making the increasing problem of
drug resistance in human pathogens of animal origin.
