ABSTRACT
The aim ofthis study is to determine
antimicrobial activities of bitterleaf extract on fish pathogen. A total
offifty 50 fresh fish samples were collected basically for this study. The fish
sample were transported alive in plastic containers (covered with net) to the
microbiology laboratory for analysis. The disease free bitterleaf was collected
from National Root Crop Research Instituted (NRCRI) and was brought for
identification and authentication at the Herbarium ofthe Department of Plant
sciences and Biotechnology, Michael Okpara university of Agriculture, Umudike,
Abia State. A total number of three (3) bacterial genera which belong to the
genera Escherichia coli, Salmonella species and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated
from fish. The 100% ,80%, 40% concentration ofmethanol extract ofbitterleaf
shows higher zone ofinhibition more than the other concentration, on E. coli,
S. aureus and Salmonella, 10% shows no inhibitory activity. The 100%, 80%, 40%
and 20% concentration of ethanol extract shows higher zone of inhibition more
than the other concentration, on E. coli, S. aureus and Salmonella, 10% shows
no inhibitory activity. The 100% and 80% concentration of water extract shows
higher zone of inhibition more than the other concentration, on E. coli, S.
aureus and Salmonella, 20% and 10% shows no inhibitory activity. Shows the
Phytochemicals present in aqueous extracts, methanol extract and ethanolic
extracts were flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins and phenol.
