Antibacterial Activities Of Aqueous And Methanol Extracts Of Garcina Kola Leaf Extracts (Akilu) Against Some Bacterial Pathogens:- Okwuru, Bridget C.
ABSTRACT
Garcinia kola leaf (Akilu) exhibited antimicrobial activity against both the gram
positive and gram negative test-organisms at 500ug/m and 250mg/m for methanolic
extract except for P. aeruginosa (ATCC27854) which have no inhibition at 250ug/ml.
Aqueous extracts of Garcinia kola
leaf had strong inhibition against Staphylococcus
aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli
(ATCC 25922) and Salmonella typhi at
500mg/ml. Partial – no inhibition was observed in lower concentrations at
62.5ug/ml and 31.2ug/ml. The extracts had MIC values ranging from 250mg/ml –
7.81mg/ml. MBC values ranges from 250mg/ml – 125mg/ml. There was no spectrum
activity at methanolic extract and aqueous extracts of Garcinia kola leaf at the
values of MIC at 250ug/ml. Strong inhibition was observed at MIC values at
250mg/ml. Antimicrobial activity was not observed for aqueous and methanol
extracts of Garcinia kola leaf at 62.5ug/ml, 31.2ug/ml,
15.6ug/ml and 7.81ug/ml. The phytochemical screening showed that the extract of
Garcinia kola leaf are rich in alkaloid (1.8%), saponin (2.04%), flavonoid
(0.68%) and terpenoid (0.85%) appears to be low in quantity.
