ABSTRACT
The
response ofthe growth and anatomy offour species of plant, Portulacea oleracea,
Setaria barbata, Commelina diffusa and Synedrella midiflora in spent
lubricating oil (SLO) contaminated and uncontaminated soil are investigated.
The anatomical study ofthis four plants gotten from spent lubricating oil (SLO)
polluted site and unpolluted site was carefully studied with the aid of a light
microscope. The result revealed the undulate nature ofthe leaf epidermal cell
wall ofstomata, irregularly arrangement in contaminated ones to parallel
arrangement in uncontaminated ones. The result also showed in the stem ofthe plants
an irregular arrangement ofthe parenchyma cells and deposit ofheavy metals
which are obvious. There is also variation on the root ofthe plants studied
which ranges from large and circular shaped cells in the uncontaminated to
irregularly shaped cells and tangentially placed cortical cells ofthe spent
lubricating oil contaminated root. The significant difference ofthe anatomy of
the environmentally variable plants have been investigated in accordance to the
important ofthese plants as weed and possible phytoremediant
