Analysis Of The Multiphase Queuing System (A Case Study Of The Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia):- Mmahi, Ekenma C.
ABSTRACT
This study aims at reducing the waiting time
of patients at the antenatal care unit of the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia,
as well as optimizing resource utilization. Based on the observations made at
the case unit, a single server single queue system with multiple phases is
typical of its operations. This study has employed the observation method to
keep log of arrival and departure time of patients. From the data collected,
arrival and service rates were obtained. These performance parameters were
analyzed for the model in existence and experimented on other multiphase
queuing models to obtain the optimal model for the system. Results indicate
that the multi server queuing system with multiple phases (Erlang model II) has
a waiting time of 0.15 minutes, and a server utilization of 46% .This result
supersedes that ofthe other queuing models given that it contributed the least
total cost to the system. The Erlang service time model II has been adjudged to
be optimal for the system in terms of waiting time and utilization.
