ABSTRACT

The computer is one of the powerful forces in banks today. It is being put to use everywhere, in homes and in organizations of all sizes. One cannot doubt that its usage is having a strolling ci led or impact on banks. the contribution of the banking industry to the economic development of any nation cannot be over emphasized. Computer has also influenced greatly to ease the functions performed by this industry in trying to meet its economic obligations to the nation. However, the problem of computerization of our banks is numerous. These ranges from training of personnel and financial cost, lack of adequate application plan, storage of finance and manpower, to lack basic necessities like electric power supply. Iii trying to state the influence of information technology oil the operational efficiency of our banks, the researcher used both primarily and secondary data. The researcher used First Bank of Nigeria plc for case study and occasionally drew emphasis on their operations. The researcher employed the survey method with a sample drawn from First Bank plc. The researcher as well used questionnaires and oral interview to supplement the information collected so as to draw an empirical conclusion. Computerization has led to more efficient information storage in banking. Computerization has helped to speed up service to customers. Computerization has helped in the increase of bank deposit base. Computerization has not helped to reduce the cost of running bank services. Computerization has reduced the daily work load associated with banking operation. In conclusion of this side of the research work, it should be noted that computer is an intellectual tool contributes to output by increase efficiency and effectiveness and it is also faster and accurate.
