ABSTRACT

A pot experiment was conducted during 2007 and 2008 cropping seasons at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike' s green house, to assess the effect of pH (4.58, 5.58, 6.58), phosphorus (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 kg ha') and potassium (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 kg ha') rates on speargrass growth and development. The treatments were laid out in a split plot arrangement in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The pH levels were assigned to the main plots and the fertilizer rates were in the subplots. The results obtained showed that increase in single potassium fertilizer (Murate of Potash) rates above 30 kg ha' significantly decreased speargrass density by 61 - 100% in 2007 and by 90 — 100% in 2008 when compared with the control. Soil pH did not significantly affect all speargrass traits measured in both years. Speargrass grew better when phosphorus (Single super phosphate) fertilizer was applied at the rates of 90 and 120 kg ha' in both years. The interaction between the fertilizer rates and soil pH were significant in speargrass leaf area, speargrass number of tillers and speargrass tiller-plant ratio. A positive correlation was observed between leaf area and all the other measured traits in both years. In 2007, leaf area significantly correlated positively with shoot dry matter (r = 0.76, P = 0.05, n = 99), number of tillers (r = 0.70, P = 0.05, n 99) and rhizome dry matter (1= 0.74, P 0.05, n = 99). Similarly, leaf area strongly correlated positively with shoot dry matter (r = 0.91, P 0.05, n = 99), rhizome dry matter (r = 0.84, P = 0.05, n = 99) and number of tillers (r = 0.78, P = 0.05, n = 99) in 2008.
