An Appraisal Of The Credit Worthiness Of Small Holder Farmers In Ikwuano Local Government Area Of Abia State.
ABSTRACT
This study is an appraisal of credit worthiness of small holder farmers in Ikwuano LGA of Abia State. A random sample of 70 farmers were chosen from. the study Area for study. Questionnaire were used for data collection. Data analysis was done using means frequency distribution, percentages and regression analysis. The study shows that farmers in the study are were elderly and Uterate. Farm size was small with a mean of 3.l8ha while household size was large. That farmers have low level of farm income and value of farm assets indicating that they are not likely to repay debt. Farm size, household expenditure and level of farm income were significant factors that determine credit worthiness. To improve farmers access to credit, measures are required which will improve access of land and increase farm size. To ensure a higher farm incomes for farmers, a product price support scheme for farmers should be established to ensure higher prices for farm products. Higher prices would mean higher incomes for farmers. Higher incomes resulting from increased output resulting from an increase in farm size and higher output prices will increase the ability of farmers to repay their debt and ensure improved access to credit.
