ABSTRACT

 Air pollutants and their effects on human and plants health were studied in seven locations selected at random within Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, from October 1, 2004 through September 30, 2005. Identification of air pollutants was done taking air sample once a month in triplicate at recorded times at k sampling stations. Questionnaire was used to study air pollutants human health effects. Reports of blood sample analysis of some patients were analysed. Diagnostic reports from medical officers of patients from hospitals within communities in the study area were analysed. Air pollutants effects on plant diversity and abundance were studied by laying at each station five quadrats of 2.50 x 2.50m along a transect line of 50Dm. The air pollutant concentration distribution at every point the quadrat was laid was recorded. The data collected revealed that: Carbon II Oxide, Sulphur IV Oxide, Hydrogen II Suiphide, Ammonia and Suspended Particulate Matters distribution in Akwa Ibom State were significantly different in all locations but not significantly different in all the months. Nitrogen IV Oxide, Hydrogen Cynaide and Chlorine were not significantly different in all locations and months. Air pollutants had effects on human health, and were the main causative agent for asthmatics and for the non-pathogenic eye and nose irritations and respiratory problems on affected patients mostly children of 3-12 years age range. Plant diversity and density were affected by air pollutants and caused the decrease closer to point source of pollutants while progressive increase away was observed. Die back of twigs and accumulation of dust on leaves were prevalent. It is recommended that synergistic or antagonistic effects of emissions, and corporate study of pollutants on forest be mounted. Total Product Exploration Package Policy (TPEPP) be adopted to stem gas flaring.
