Abstract

The removal of Pb(ii), Cd(ii) and Cr(vi) ions from aqueous solutions using blend of elephant grass and local sponge was studied using batch adsorption process. Reaction conditions such as the effect ofparticle size, adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature were evaluated. The results obtained indicated that the adsorption rates ofthe metal ions decreased with increase in particle size ofthe adsorbent. The amount ofmetal ions adsorbed increased with increase in dosage of adsorbent. The adsorption process was found to be pH dependent and the results obtained indicated that the optimum pH for the sorption of Pb(ii), Cd(ii) and Cr(vi) was 6.0. The rate ofadsorption was also found to increase with increase in the contact time. Application of pseudo-first and pseudo-second order model as well as intraparticle diffusion model to the adsorption data indicated that these models were obeyed. Adsorption characteristics of the adsorbent were investigated by fitting data into different equilibrium adsorption models viz: Langmuir, Freundlich, Flory-Huggins and DubininRadushkevich models. Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption model best describe the adsorption data. Hence the mechanism of physical adsorption was favoured. Also thermodynamic considerations indicated that the adsorption progresses with increasing degree oforderliness.
