ABSTRACT

The potential ofCentrosema pubescens (Butterfly pea) for adsorption ofCd(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions from aqueous solutions was determined by batch process. The influences of parameters such as pH and contact time on metal adsorption were investigated. It was observed that these heavy metal ions showed maximum adsorption at pH 6.0. Kinetic modeling of Cd(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions using pseudo-first order yielded Ki values of 0.012gmgmin-1, -O.OBgmgmin'1 and O.OlSgmgmin'1 respectively, and for the pseudo-second order, the K2 values ofCd(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions are 0.01 IbOgmgmin’1, 0.00506gmgmin'' and 0.00207gmgmin'1 respectively. The adsorption capacity (qe) values are 52.631, 50.000 and 52.63 Img/g for Cd(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions respectively. Kinetic modeling of the results shows that the pseudo-second order model best describes the process and mechanism of adsorption shows that the process was intra-particle diffusion controlled for Ni(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. The affinity of the adsorbent for the adsorbent for the metal ions also follows the trend Pb(II) = Cd(II) <Ni(II). This will serve as parameters to consider in the design of treatment plant for these heavy metals detoxification using Centrosemapubescens (Butterfly pea).
