Acute Toxicity Value And Effects On Hematological Parameters Of Different Solvent Extract Of Dacryodes Edulis Against Monosodium Glutamate Induced Toxicity In Wister Rats:- Ebeleagu Joseph C
ABSTRACT
Hematological indices are usually used in the
prognosis and possibly identification of onset of disease conditions. Medicinal
plants have been used for the management of ailments but at high doses, some
plants could deplete health status and at times lethal thus warranting this
study aimed at acute toxicity value and effects on hematological parameters of
different solvent extract of Dacryodesedulis against monosodium glutamate
induced toxicity in Wister rats. Total of 48 rats were shared into 8 groups of
6 animals each. Group 1 received food and water while group 2 received 800mg/kg
monosodium glutamate. Group 3 was co-treated sylimarin. The other treatment
groups were treated with ethanol fraction, methanol fraction, ethylacetete
fraction, Nhexane fraction and aqueous fraction. The result ofthe two phases of
acute toxicity done (lOmg, lOOmg and 1000 for phase 1) and (1600mg, 2900mg and
5000mg for phase 2) showed no death of animals across all fractions even at the
highest dose. The result of hematological indices showed reduced RBC, Hb, PCV
with increased WBC in the MSG group suggesting toxicity. However, the RBC, Hb,
PCV were increased while the WBC was decreased across the groups co-treated
different fractions of D. edulis. Hence, it could be concluded that the
different fractions of D.edulis were not toxic to the rats rather, improved the
hematological indices from the toxicity induced by high dose ofmonosodium
glutamate.
