Access And Utilization Of Sweetpotato Value-Added Innovations Among Rural Households In South-East-Nigeria

This study analysed access and utilization of sweetpotato value-added innovation among rural households in South-east, Nigeria. Data for this study were collected through questionnaire, which was administered to 396 rural households in three states in South-east, Nigeria. Two Focus Group Discussions were conducted to validate the data collected through the questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Findings of this study showed that majority of the respondents75%, 63%, 26%, 64% & 11% were female, had extension contact, had access to credit, were members of social organizations and realized income from sweetpotato value added innovations respectively in South-east, Nigeria. Additionally, the mean age, household size and level of formal education of the respondents were 48, 6 and 8 respectively. More than 65% of the respondents were not aware of each of the sweetpotato value added innovations considered in the study. There was also low level of access ( =1.74) and low level of utilization (= 1.09) of sweetpotato value-added innovations in the zone. Respondents’ perceived that sweetpotato value- added innovations was cost-saving (x̄ = 3.76), complex (x̄ = 3.28), similar to local practices (x̄ = 3.06), affordable ( = 3.77), profitable ( = 3.44), and time-saving (x̄ = 3.52). The major factors constraining utilization of sweetpotato value-added innovation identified in the study include lack of funds (x̄ = 2.20), insufficient knowledge of practices (x̄ = 2.33), lack of equipment/facilities (x̄ = 2.14) and lack of follow-up trainings (x̄ = 2.29). The result of the simple linear regression analysis showed that there was a highly significant and positive relationship between level of access and level of utilization of sweetpotato value-added innovation at 1% level of significance. Furthermore, there was significant difference in the level of access to sweetpotato value added innovation across the three States at 5%. Similarly, there was significant difference in the level of utilization of sweetpotato value added innovation across the three States at 5%. Access and level of access to sweetpotato value added innovation were significantly influenced by some socio-economic factors like sex (1%), level of education (1%), marital status (10%), processing experience (10%), extension contact (1%) and means of technology transfer (5%). Level of utilization of sweetpotato value added innovation was significantly influenced by some socio-economic factors like level of education (10%), marital status (5%), occupation (5%), processing experience (5%), extension contact (1%), income from sale of products (1%) and ‘produce for sale’ (1%). There was also significant relationship between technology attributes like complexity (1%), similar to local practices (10%) and level of utilization of sweetpotato value added innovation. We therefore reject all the null hypotheses and accept the alternative hypotheses. The study concluded that there was low level of access to and utilization of sweetpotato value added innovation in the study area and therefore recommended among others, the need to ascertain farmers felt needs before agricultural innovations are developed and disseminated.
