ABSTRACT.
The study investigated the various sources of financing poultry production. These sources includes the formal, Informal and semi-formal that lend money to farmers. The objectives of the study are; to examine the various sources of credit and their lending condition, to determine the farmers response to the lending condition and the effect of loan on the farmers level of production. Questionnaire were used to collect the primary data. Out of the fifty- seven communities in lkwuano, six communities were randomly selected. Two sets of questionnaire were used, one for the farmers loan beneficiaries, the other to the financial sources. Purposive and randomized sampling techniques were used to collect data from the farmers. The data collected were analysed by simple statistical techniques like percentage, tables and averages. The stated hypothesis was verified by use of correlation analysis. From the findings, the financial sources in the study area includes; co-operative, the Nigeria Agricultural and cooperative Bank (NACB) which are formal sources while the informal sources include, friends, relatives and personal savings. The result of the study showed that farmers prefer to borrow from the informal sources and from the semi-formal source, owning to the fact that no collateral is required, low interest rate and the readiness to issue out loan at the desired time without delay, compared to the formal sources which charged high interest rate, coupled with the protocols that are involved. It was recommended that, effort should be made by the government to improve these formal credit source by reducing the high interest rate also since most of the poultry farmers in the study area were educated, their certificate can as well serves as collateral.
