Variation Pattern For Growth Traits Of Pure And Crossbreeds Red Sokoto And West African Dwarf Goats During Fattening In The Humid Tropical Environment

ABSTRACT

This experiment was carried out to compare the growth performance of pure and crossbred kids of West African Dwarfs (WAD), Red Sokoto (RS) goats fattened on a 75% grass + legume fodder and 25% concentrate for 12 weeks in a humid tropical environment. The experiment was completely randomized design (CRD) with genotypes as the major factor of interest. Four genetic group consisting of Red Sokoto (RS x RS) pure West African dwarf (WAD x WAD), main cross (RS x WAD) and reciprocal cross (WAD x RS) progenies were used with the total number of 8 animals and two from each genotypes. Parameters measured include body weight changes, linear body measurement, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR). Results then the RS x WAD weighed significantly (P<0.05) more (9200 ± 200) at initial body weight than the RS x RS and WAD x RS., average daily gain (ADG). T7he RS x RS achieved the highest of (85.75 ± 0.00) and FCR was low and efficient (2.81 ± 0.23) in WAD x WAD. From these results, it also shows that plain cross (RS x WAD) and pure RS x RS could be selected as they showed good performance in both weight and linear body parameter. The pure and cross bred Red Sokoto and West African Dwarf growing kids performed in the humid tropical zone under intensive management system.
