ABSTRACT

Field experiment was conducted at the research farm of National Institute of Horticulture (NIHORT) , Okigwe, Imo state in 2007 cropping season to investigate the effect of weed control methods and plant population on the yield of three soybean varieties. The experiment was set up as a split-split plot in a Randomizied Complete Block Design. The main plot treatments consisted of three soyabean varieties TGx1844-18E, TGx1448-2E and TGx1440-1E. The sub-plot treatments consisted of three plant populations: 133,333p1ants/hectare, 200,000plants/hectare and 400,000plants/hectare while the sub- sub plot treatments were weed control regimes: no weeding, weed once, weed twice, weed thrice and weed free. The result showed that keeping the field free from weeds or weeding them thrice had the best effect on seed yield while weeding once or twice were not significantly different from no weeding. At 400,000 plants/hectare, seed yield was better than 200,000p1ants/hectare but not better than 133,333p1ants/hectare. Also weed control regime methods influenced the density of grasses and sedges, total weed density, number of broad leaf at four weeks and eight weeks after planting. At 400,000p1ants/hectare weed biomass was greatly reduced at eight weeks after planting. The result therefore suggest that, to get an optimum yield of soybean, it is advisable to keep the crops free from weed or weed thrice with the use of plant population of 400,000p1ants/hectare.
