The Prevalence Of Trypanosomiasis Among Goats In Animal Farm Of Michael Okpara University Of Agriculture, Umudike Umuahia, Abia State.
ABSTRACT.
The prevalence of trypanosomiasis in 40 goats from Animal farm of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Umuahia Abia state were investigated. The goats were of different breeds West African Dwarf 31 (77.5%), Sokoto Red 6(25%) and Cross breed of Sokoto Red and West African Dwarf 3(7.5%). The goats were bled from their ear lobes during the dry season (January — March) and wet Season (April — August) 2002. Blood samples were examined by wet preparation and stained smear methods (Thick and thin films). White blood cell counts and haemoglobin estimation. The differences between the white blood cell count and haemoglobin of the positive and negative samples were not statistically significant (P 0.2 > 0.05) in each case, 4(10%) goats were infected with trypanosomes with 3(9.6%) from West African Dwarf breed and 1(16.6%) from Sokoto Red. Of importance are the findings that 3(7.5%) of the 4(100%) samples positive for trypanosoma were T,ypanosoma brucei (plate) 1, which might be of zoonotic importance. The infection was higher (75%) in dry season than wet season (25%) but the difference was not statistically significant (P 0.2 > 0.05). it is desirable that goats be included in any therapeutic or prophylactic programme for trypanosomiasis control.
