ABSTRACT

 The research is a pilot study on the digitization of theses and dissertation in MOUA U library. The major purpose was to ascertain the extent of digitization of theses and dissertation in MOUA U library. It was guided by five objectives and five research questions. The study has a population of 71 which was totally enumerated for the study. Two data collection instrument were: an observation checklist and questionnaire. Data were analyzed using percentage and mean scores. Data analysis revealed that the extent of availability of these and dissertation to be 1,284 consisting of 913 theses and 371 dissertation. Furthermore, findings revealed that increased access of these and dissertations, effective preservation of theses and dissertation, increased space conservation and speedy retrieval of theses dissertation are the major purposes for digitization of library resources. The result also showed that the extent of digitization of theses and dissertation is low as MOUAU library carries out only creation and management of library website and database. Lack of planning for digitization, inadequate funding, ineffective institutional policy on digitization, inadequate computer technologies, inadequate skilled personnel and inadequate power supply are some of the major problems militating against effective digitization of these and dissertation in MOUA U library. The study proffered solutions to the challenges of digitization of theses and dissertation which includes provision of adequate funds, enshrining effective digitization policy, provision of adequate computer technologies, training and retraining of staff etc. The study concluded that in order to remain relevant in the present digital environment, MOUA U library should make every effort to digitize their and dissertations for preservation and easy access. Bases on the findings the study recommended alternative power supply, adequate funding, training of librarians to acquire digitization skills and proper selection packages as strategies for effective digitization
