The Efficacy Of Azadirachta Indica Powder In Controlling The Pest Activity Of Cosmopolites Sordidus (Germar) (Coleóptera: Curculionidae) On Musa Spp. (Plantain) Suckers
ABSTRACT
Studies were conducted in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State between the months of June - November, 2008 to determine the efficacy of Azadirachia indica leaf powders on pest activity of CosnopoIiics sordidus on suckers of plantain (Musa spp).Width and height of pseudostem attained over a period of one to two months after planting were Used as parameters to access growth rate. The A. indica leaf powerder was mixed With Sand in different ratios,10gN 30gS, 20gN 20gS, and 30gN 10gS, these were used to top planting soils in bags where sword suckers were planted, 1 0 adult weevils were introduced into each of these mixtures. A control experiment was in place (without Neem leaves only 10 adult weevils). The results showed that the degree of damage by the weevil to plantain correlated positively with amount of neem powders introduced to each bag. The width(girth)values obtained statistically gave mean values as 3.6667 (:10.0087) For control bags, 4.3333 (10.0408) For 10gN 30gS, 7.1667 (±0.2887) 20gN 20gS, 7.8333 (±0.2887) for 30gN 10gS and height values as 11.500 (±0.500) for control bag, 18.167 (±1.756) for 10gN 30gS, 25.667 (±9.155) for 20gN 20gS and 21.667 (+9.292) for 30gN logs; 3 stage of insects life cycle was seen in control bags and bags containing 10gN 30gS, Bags containing 20gN 20gS and 3OgN 10gS no stage of insects life cycle was found there there was significance at P<O.005 level of probability only in bags containing 2OgN 20gS and 3OgN 10gS in all experiments. This implies that the plant powder has potentials as a botanical for the control of this serious pest of plantain in our locality.
