ABSTRACT
The study looks at the effects of labour relations on job
satisfaction among health workers in Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia,
Abia State, Nigeria. Beyond the broad objective, the study sought specifically
to examine how labour relation practices and strategies that exist among health
workers affect job satisfaction in FMC, Umuahia, estimate the degree of
relationship between job satisfaction and industrial actions in. FMC, Urnuahia,
ascertain whether labour unions promote harmony between management and
employee's in FMC, Umuahia, and identify ways of enhancing a healthy
relationship between labour and management in FMC, Umuahia. A total of 300
respondents were selected comprising of both management and staff of FMC,
Umuahia, Abia State, using stratified sampling technique from which data and
information were elicited using the questionnaire. Analytically, the study
employed descriptive statistics, correlation analysis and z-test in testing the
hypotheses. The analytical result revealed that labour relation practices and
strategies have a significant effect on job satisfaction among health workers
in FMC, Umuahia, that job satisfaction have no significant relationship vidi
industrial actions in FMC, Umuahia, that labour unions promote harmony between
management and workers in FMC, Umuahia and that .here is a significant
relationship between labour and management in FMC. Umuahia. The study concludes
that maintenance of harmonious labour relations is vital and important for
growth and development of an' institution and recommends amongst others that
management should involve their employees in decision making concerning labour
related matters that may result to workers dissatisfaction and conflict.
