ABSTRACT

The effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa extract on Lipid profile parameters was studied in Thioacetamide intoxicated Wister rats. The sample of fresh leaves of Hibiscus sabdariffa were dried, grinded and am extraction was done on it with the use of ethanol and water (aqueous) and the extract was used in treating thioacetamide intoxicated rats, since the thioacetamide caused hypatotoxicity in the rats. The rats were in five groups, each group has five rats. Group one was under control with just feed and water, group two was administered with thioacetamide, group three was administered with thioaceamide and sylmarine, group four was administered with thioacetamide and low Hibiscus sabdariffa extract (250mg/kg), group five was administered with thioacetamide and high Hibiscus sabdariffa extract (500mg/kg). After the administration, the rats were sacrificed through cardiac puncture and the blood was taken and was used for the analysis to determine the following lipid profile parameters; triglyceride, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein. In triglyceride, the group one, group two and group four rats have significant increase with the values 47,93±0.43, 45.63±1.83 and 40.58±0.53 respectively and group three and five rats have significant decrease with the values 30.19±0.39 and 36.25±1.5 respectively. There was also a significant increase in group one, two and four rats in cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein and significant decrease in group three and five rats in cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein. In highdensity lipoprotein, there was a significant decrease in group one and two with the values 4.18±0.05 and 3.5±0.15 and a significant increase in group three, four and five with the values 10.16±0.33, 8.83±0.14 and 6.83±0.14 respectively. This result deduced that the Hibiscus sabdariffa extract possess hepato regenerative properties which significantly reduce lipid profile levels of some parameters which thioacetamide made high like triglyceride, cholesterol and lowdensity lipoprotein and it also increase high-density lipoprotein level since the thioacetamide made it to be low. This study proves that Hibiscus sabdariffa extract has the ability to reduce hepatotoxicity although it is not effective as the use of sylmarine
