ABSTRACT
High cost of feed has been recognized as one of the major factors militating against rapid development of poultry industry in the developing countries. Nutritionists therefore are faced with the task of staking balance between quality and cost of feed. Ukachukwu (1997) had advocated the need to produce least cost feed rather than low cost feed. Mutassimet al., (2008) and Ojewola and Oluyemi(201 1) reported that feed is the most expensive item in poultry production. Maize grains are commonly used as energy source in poultry diets. Due to its use in livestock diets and as in alternative fuel in ethanol production, the demand for maize have increased, necessitating the exploration of other energy source for livestock diets (Nyannoret a!, 2007). The high increase in demand of maize has led many farmers to alternative feeds such as soya beans which is generally accepted as the basis for poultry diets. Some countries may not have the financial resources to import those feeds stuffs. Others may not have the land or climate to grow position when difficult economic circumstances arise (Hutagalung, 2000). Based on this research it has compelled to the use of other cereals, as alternate energy sources which are highly available and cheaper, such as acha, sorghum, and millets. Acha (Digitariaexillis) refered to as "foniofinni," is one of the most nutritive of all grains because they are rich in methionine and cystaine besides its among the world best tasting cereals (NRC,1996). The potential for the production this grain in Nigeria and west Africa is high and its superior to other cereals in performance under moisture stress and low soil fertility. In Nigeria less widely produced in Bauchi, Plateau, and Kaduna states and used for human feeding.
