ABSTRACT

This research work involves the assessment of solid waste management in the university hostels in Nigeria (Case study: Mouau). This work is aimed at Characterizing and recycling of the solid waste generated within the University undergraduate Hostels. This study was grouped into five zones viz: Old Male hostel, IBB Hostel, Female Old Hostel, NDDC Hostel and New Goodluck Jonathan Hostel. The method adopted for this research are Primary Data collection and secondary method. From the result obtained, the of Male Hostel has 14.9kg of Rubber, textile materials 13.7kg, Agricultural waste 20.3kg and Nylon 58.4kg. New Male Hotel has 1.8kg of Electrical Waste, 16.6kg of Paper, 12.8kg of wood waste. Female Old Hostel and NDDC has 5.3kg of Hair, 4.4kg of Leather, 6.4kg of Glass and 206kg of Nylon. New Female Hostel has Agricultural waste of 22.1kg, 18.7kg of paper, 224.4kg of nylon, 7.3kg of glass, 2.1kg of concrete and the total waste generated was 825.5kg in all the hostels. Agricultural waste and paper I carton were converted to compost (organic manure) and ash for the benefit of agricultural crop. The compost has 25.72a ±0.004 of organic matter, 3.16a ± 0.01 of Nitrogen, 5.42 ± 0.03 of calcium and 0.27a ± 0.03 of Sodium while the paper ash contains of 19.42 b ± 0.01 of organic content, 0.16 b ± 0.01 of organic content, 281) ± 0.01 of Potassium, PH of 5.82" ± 0.02 and 0.85 b ± 0.01 of Calcium. In conclusion, the waste generated from the characterization is high, hence there need for adequate waste management in the university in order to avoid flooding, health hazard and blockage of channels.
