ABSTRACT
Save the time of the user: Implications for
librarians and library services in the age of technology. · J is on opinion
paper and therefore expository. It explained the basic principles of
lihrarianship as ·\. contained in the fourth Law of Library Science. conceptual
ideas of librarian. library services and ' technology. The paper was done in
four segments: flash back lo the beginning of libraries and :tlibrarianship;
the incursion of technology into library services and operations: technology
complements, not supplants; save the time of the user; and implications in the
age of technology. Ir traced the origin of libraries from the early times. when
libraries were seen as a store house of recorded knowledge to the era of
traditional libraries. when technology was absent. and to the age of
technology. It observed that technology has altered significantly the modus
operandi in information services provision and the role of librarians. The
paper identified the fundamental_, principles and philosophy of librarianship
as exemplified by the fourth Law of Library Science. _ · ·} "Save the time
of the user", and cautioned that despite the importance of technology in
library l operations and services. it does nor supplant. but complements the
principles and practice of . · Jt librarianship. The paper concluded by
