ABSTRACT
Field experiments were conducted during the 2002 and 2003 cropping seasons at the Teaching and Research Farm of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Urnudike, to assess the effects of different levels of gamma ray irradiation on the three vegetable cowpea varieties (IT8ID-1228-I4, IT 835-899, IT93K-915). Six levels ranging from 0 (control) to 25 kilorad (Kr) were applied to cowpea seeds and laid out in a split plot in a randomized complete block design, replicated three times. The irradiation induced marked genetic variation among the varieties. Significant effects (P<0.05) observed in the number of pods; branches, flowers, leaves per plants, number of seeds per pod, and plant height were higher in IT 81D-1228-14 than iT 835-899, and IT 93K-915. The dose of 5-10Kr had a significant influence on the number of days to flowering; pod filling, physiological maturity, number of leaves, branches, flowers per plant, number of seeds per pod, number of pods per plant, forage yield, plant height and leaf .arca in both cropping years. This dose is therefore, recommended for future experiments. Fifteen (15) Kr (and above) resulted in decrease in all traits. Correlation studies revealed a positive significant relationship (P<0.05) between the fresh pod yield and number of leaves, flowers, branches per plant, plant height, pod per plant, number of seeds per pod and fresh pod with in both years.
