Public Library Patronage And Strategies To Bring Back The User: The Case Of Umuahia Public Libraries, Abia State, Nigeria:- Amogu, Uma K.
Abstract
The
importance of public libraries in'education and information dissemination is
well acknowledged the world over. Public libraries are required to provide
satisfactory services that would endear them to the reading public.
Unfortunately. inadequate use of public libraries hos been recorded. The study
therefore, focused on inadequate we of public libraries in Nigeria, using the
Umuahia Public library as a focal point. The study adopted case study research
design. It employed observation and oral interview techniques to obtain data
from library staff and patrons to determine the effectiveness of library
services in the Umuahia Public library and users' patronage. The study hos
exposed some of the challenges the Umuahia Public library fare in the areas of
infrastructure. services and programmes of the library and collections. The
study also found out that there is absence of computers and Internet and these
have affected users' patronage of the Umuahia Public Library. The study
advanced some possible strategies that would be employed to bring back the user
and farther recommends declaration of state of emergency on the sector and
transformation of public libraries through various innovative programmes as the
way forward.
