ABSTRACT

Evaluation of the main soil physical and chemical properties which influence macro and micro aggregate stability of some top soils were made. The top (0-20 cm) soil samples were collected from 10 different land use types within MOUAU and its adjoining environs located in Ikwuano, Abia State. Stability indices used in this study are mean weight diameter (MWD) for macro and clay dispersion index (CDI) for micro aggregates. The evaluation method is Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The component defining variables are those properties with highest loadings on each component, providing the best relationship between the variables and the aggregate stability indices. Results indicate that Field Capacity (FC), Micro Porosity (Pmj) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) are the significant physical properties influencing CDI. Also, FC, and Macro porosity significantly influence MWD. The significant chemical properties influencing MWD are CEC, pH (H20), K and H while those influencing CDI are Ca and CEC, pH (H20), K and H. These soil components significantly influencing aggregate stability of the soils studied can be used to develop empirical models for estimating the stability of soils in water.
